ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS WITH THE VELSCOPE SYSTEM

we offer you peace of mind with oral cancer screenings. We use the VELSCOPE System to ensure a thorough screening.

Did You Know?

Every day someone in North America dies of oral cancer. That is twice as many people that die from cervical cancer. When oral cancer is discovered in its late stages, the five-year survival rate is only 20-30%. By supplementing the white light oral cancer exam with the VELSCOPE system, cancerous and precancerous lesions that might not be apparent to the naked eye are more evident. The VELSCOPE system is a leader in fluorescence visualization and is used to conduct more oral cancer exams than any other device in the world.

VELSCOPE exams can be incorporated as part of your hygiene exam. The oral cancer screening can be conducted at the end of an exam and only takes a few minutes. The procedure is completely pain-free and does not involve unpleasant rinses or messy dyes.

What Happens During an Oral Cancer Screening?
Oral Cancer Screening is done in two steps. First, we will conduct a conventional oral screening which includes examining the mouth for lesions that can be seen by the naked eye. Next, the VELSCOPE is used to see beneath the surface of your mouth to find any potentially dangerous growths that may have missed with the conventional exam. We find that the additional cost for this exam is very reasonable and in some cases is covered by medical insurance. Schedule a consultation at First avenue family dentistry in St. Thomas. We can discuss your oral cancer screening needs.
